Pisgah Brewing Company began as a home‑brewer’s stubborn experiment and grew into a regional presence tucked into the hills of Black Mountain. Founder Dave Quinn brought a gold‑medal pale ale from the American Home‑Brew competition into a small commercial operation, cobbling together financing from friends and a bargain purchase of used equipment. Early favors — a trucker who hauled brew kit at dawn and a fellow brewer who sold dozens of old kegs — read like rural logistics as much as family lore, and the brewery’s river of stories is integral to its identity. Black Mountain was chosen for its inexpensive space and, the brewery says, exceptionally good water. The first commercial batches of Pisgah Pale Ale found their way quickly into Asheville bars, and the business grew into a public taproom by 2008. Over the years the operation expanded its floor, added courtyard stonework and a fire pit, and built the Pisgah Outdoor Stage: an eight‑acre meadow used for roughly two dozen music events each summer. The taproom functions as both everyday drinking room and live music venue through the year; the outdoor stage opens seasonally. Pisgah’s beers are notable for a base of organic grain. The brewery once operated as a certified organic facility, but it stepped away from formal certification in 2013 when program changes would have required alterations to its processes; the commitment to organic grain remains intact as a guiding principle. The lineup centers on approachable, malt‑forward ales — the Pisgah Pale Ale continues to be the brewery’s flagship — produced at a scale that grew substantially following equipment and facility upgrades in the early 2010s, bringing annual capacity into the mid‑thousands of barrels. What persists through the anecdotes and the expansion is a concrete sense of place: a small mountain town, proximity to regional watersheds, and a local music tradition that often shares billing with the beer.
